How Do I Apply for U.S. Citizenship Through Naturalization?

Becoming a U.S. citizen is a major milestone and a lifelong goal for many immigrants. While the benefits of citizenship are significant, the naturalization process can feel overwhelming due to detailed eligibility requirements, extensive paperwork, and a formal interview and testing process.

Understanding how naturalization works—and what steps are involved—can help you move forward with confidence.

What Is Naturalization?

Naturalization is the legal process by which a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) becomes a U.S. citizen. Once naturalized, you gain the right to vote, apply for a U.S. passport, petition more family members, and enjoy protection from removal proceedings.

Who Is Eligible to Apply for U.S. Citizenship?

To apply for naturalization, you must generally meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years
(or 3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen)
  • Have continuous residence in the U.S. during that time
  • Be physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the required period
  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Demonstrate knowledge of U.S. history and government
  • Be a person of good moral character
  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States

Some applicants may qualify for exceptions or waivers, depending on age, length of residence, or disability.

Step 1: File Form N-400

The first step in applying for citizenship is filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form requires detailed information about your:

  • Immigration history
  • Residence and travel
  • Employment
  • Family background
  • Criminal or legal history (if any)

Accuracy is critical. Errors or omissions can delay your case or lead to denial.

Step 2: Attend a Biometrics Appointment

After USCIS receives your application, you will be scheduled for a biometrics appointment, where your fingerprints, photo, and signature are collected. This information is used for background and security checks.

Step 3: Attend the Naturalization Interview

You will then be scheduled for an interview with a USCIS officer. During this appointment, the officer will:

  • Review your N-400 application
  • Ask questions about your background and eligibility
  • Test your English language skills
  • Administer the civics test

The civics test is based on 100 pre-published questions. You will be asked up to 10 questions and must answer at least 6 correctly to pass.

Step 4: Receive a Decision

After your interview, USCIS will issue a decision. Your application may be:

  • Approved
  • Continued (if more information is needed)
  • Denied

If issues arise, an immigration attorney can help respond to requests for evidence or explore next steps.

Step 5: Take the Oath of Allegiance

If approved, the final step is attending a naturalization ceremony, where you will take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a U.S. citizen.

Common Issues That Can Affect Naturalization

Naturalization applications may be delayed or denied due to:

  • Criminal history
  • Extended travel outside the U.S.
  • Incomplete or incorrect forms
  • Failure to meet residency requirements
  • Problems demonstrating good moral character

Having legal guidance can help address these concerns proactively.

How an Immigration Attorney Can Help

An experienced immigration attorney can:

  • Review your eligibility before you apply
  • Prepare and file Form N-400 accurately
  • Help you prepare for the interview and tests
  • Address potential issues before they become problems
  • Represent you if complications arise
